Burl Bag
Burl Bag
The Burl Bag is made from river rush (Schoenoplectus lacustris) using a pairing weave, with hand carved walnut fixtures and a strap hand woven from plant-dyed wool. The form of this voluptuous basket was first hand crafted from wax sheets, with the basketry and wooden elements then shaped over the top. When the piece was complete, the wax mould was broken and removed, meaning this unique shape is truly a one off.
This bag has a large, lidded main compartment, and two un-lidded side pockets. The lid is secured by a hand carved walnut buckle that rocks to allow easy threading. There are leather belt loops on the back and a strap adjuster, which means this piece can be worn securely against the body and used as a practical basket. The Burl Bag can also be hung decoratively and would make a distinctive sculptural wall piece.
Crafted entirely by hand, from hand harvested materials that grow wild in the landscapes of South West Britain.
