The Back Strap Loom
Back Strap Looms are elegantly simple looms that have been developed and used by indigenous and traditional peoples the world over. A tensioned warp is created by tethering the threads between the weaver’s body and a fixed object such as a tree or post in the ground. Some back strap looms are simply a set of sticks to which the warp threads are tied to create a shed – when the weaver wishes to take a break from work, the weaving can be wrapped around the sticks and easily stored or carried elsewhere.
In this workshop, we will be working with a basic wooden heddle to weave a belt with vertical stripes. You will learn how to select your yarns for weaving; how to set up the warp and thread the heddle; how to position yourself for weaving; and how to weave a band to an even width. You will take your weaving off the loom and choose how to finish off your warp threads using either braiding or fringing.
The workshop is held in a peaceful yurt classroom and surrounding meadow, close to the village of Littlehempston and the river Dart. It is a 10 minute drive from Totnes, and is also accessible by foot and public transport.
Cost - £85 includes all materials, drinks and snacks. Please bring a packed lunch.

Rush Foraging Bag - Four Day Course in Belgium
During this 4-day workshop you will learn techniques for weaving an organic, three-dimensional form using river rush. Landscapes of Making
Do you long to deepen your relationship to the land through the act of making? Are you interested in cultivating a reciprocal way of being that feeds the more-than-human world as much as we receive from them?
Nature offers us the constant reflection and inspiration that we are innately creative – and that our human creativity has a home and purpose within the wider, wilder landscape of beings. When we connect with this bone-deep knowing, our hands and heart are guided by the creative force inherent in all life and infused by the memory of those before us whose lives depended on transforming raw materials into functional artefacts and offerings of beauty.
During this five day residential programme, we will explore the materials that exist in the land around us, and how our creative natures and making hands can draw us into relationship with the natural world through craft.
With Isla Macleod, Elizabeth Crawford and Caroline Ross

Making such a basket requires time and concentration, so this longer workshop is an opportunity to really drop in with the weaving process, and with how materials and craft can bring us closer to ourselves and the land we are working on.
