Plaited Pouch
Plaited Pouch
The Plaited Pouch is made entirely from river sedge that has been plaited, then coiled and stitched into a basket. Plaited bramble fibres have also been used to adorn the inside and outside of the lid. The fixtures are hand carved from blue/grey Scottish ram’s horn, and the strap is hand woven from plant-dyed wools. The plump, rounded shape of this basket was first hand crafted from sheet wax, with the fastening, hinge, D-rings and basketry elements shaped over the top. When the basket was complete, the mould was broken and removed, with the wax being saved to remelt and use again.
This soft and intricate basket has one medium sized lidded compartment. This opens on a hinge carved from hazel wood, and is fastened with a tension clasp carved from ram’s horn, using a design developed by Elizabeth especially for her basket bags. This bag, with it’s gently variegated colours and textural weave, feels very much an emanation from the earth. It would make a wonderful small foraging basket or day bag, as well as a detailed and captivating decorative piece.
